Weezer & Tenacious D in Madison
Weezer & Tebacious D in Madison

The evening started off fairly badly. For one, I got mud all
over my pants on the walk to the Coliseum. The other bad thing was Duvall, formerly
known as the Smoking Popes, and the opening band that took Jimmy Eat World's place.
(J.E.W. had to miss this show cuz they were doing radio shows in Florida) Part of
Duvall's inability to entertain was that they were an unknown suprise. So, when the
lights went down, everyone was expecting The D. The other reason they sucked is cuz,
well, they sucked. Their songs weren't good. Plus, they all kinda sounded the same.
After buying some way overpriced hot dogs and coke, we (me,
terry, joe, lindsey, and others) went back into the pit to see Tenacious D, one of the
funniest and best bands in the world. They came out in chains (a la the cover of their
debut album) and played a cool little dual acoustic guitar thing, which led into
"Wonderboy." It was a little weird without drums, bass, keyboard, or electric guitar,
but it was still very cool. (On the album, they have a full band.
Click here to learn about their album) The D was very
funny and very interactive with the crowd. They played a number of songs from the album,
including "Tribute," "Wonderboy," "F--- Her Gently," "The Road," and "Double Team." They
also played a lot of rare stuff from their old HBO show, such as "The Cosmic Shame,"
"Kyle Took A Bullet For Me," and "Jesus Ranch." However, the highlights of their show
were their snippets of cover songs. Since Ozzy was at the Coliseum the night before,
they played parts of "Crazy Train." They also played parts of "Chop Suey!" by System Of
A Down, and "Summer Of '69" by Bryan Adams. During that song, they yelled at a guy in
the front row and called im stupid for wearing a Puddle of Mudd t-shirt. Plus, another
moment of hilarity came when JB showcased his ability to play a new instrument. He had
learned the "Saxaboom," which was essentially a toy sax for 6-year olds. So, he played
it while Kyle danced around like a maniac. After an extended and hilarious version of
"Double Team," they left.
Then, at about 9:30, Weezer took the stage. They started
with a new song, called "The Dawn," and followed it up with "Island In The Sun." Their
new bass player, Scott Shriner (formerly of a hard rock band called Broken) was awesome,
as was the guitar work of Rivers and Brian, and of course, Pat's drumming. Their show
was comprised mostly of stuff from the blue album, and new stuff. Sadly, they only
played one song off of "Pinkerton," and that song was "Tired Of Sex." Amidst frequent
guitar changes by Rivers & Brian, the stage occasionally changed appearance. After a few
songs, the big curtain behind the band (as seen in the picture at the top of this page)
was taken down to reveal a nifty-looking series of silver squares (as seen in the
individual pictures at the top of the page). Later, during "Hash Pipe," a small Weezer
logo was lit up under Pat's drumset. Plus, they turned up the smoke machines full blast.
The entire stage was covered in smoke. It looked very cool. In addition to that, they
busted out a cool strobe light-type dealie, which added even more coolness. They closed
their set with an extended version of "Only In Dreams." Everything was going at once:
lights, smoke, logo, and two HUGE things of confetti burst open above the pit. It was
awesome. But that wasn't the end. After about 15 minutes, they finally came back and
played "Buddy Holly" and "Surf Wax America." During the former, a giant
Weezer logo was lowered from the ceiling. It was very bright, and very large. They
finished at about 11:00 or so. It was definitely a very fun concert, and I look forward
to the next time Weezer and/or Tenacious D come back to Madison.
