Eagles vs. Cheesemakers

Eagles vs. Cheesemakers
This was the most important game of our season.
We and the Cheesemakers were both tied for first in our Southern Badger Conference, at 5-1.
(we had a better overall record, though, at 7-1, as opposed to their 6-2) So, since this
was the most important game of the season, I went. This time, I had companions, in the
form of Tear-E and Little Willie. Also, we were followed by Chelsea Kirchstein, Ryan
Peterson, and James (he only needs one name). It was a lengthier drive than I expected.
I was expecting a quick, 45-50 minute drive. However, since I was very opposed to getting
pulled over for any reason, it took 70 minutes. We drove through a couple small hick
towns, like Belleville. Man, it's gotta suck there. I can't even stand being in Cottage
Grove for more than an hour. Anyway, we finally got to Monroe, a town with 2,000 more
people than Monona. However, Monona was still (slightly) better because of the fact that
Monroe is out in the middle of nowhere. Anywayz, enough about that. Now, onto the game!
The weather was extremely cold (especially since I had
forgotten my coat), and the first half didn't help at all. The first half was the most
defensive display of football I have ever seen. No offense at all. For the entire half,
it was all punts and failed fourth down attempts. During halftime, I played hackeysack
with James, D-Money (Aure), Behren Tucker, Chase Newman, and random others. On a musical
note, for those of you that remember my description of the Baraboo band, the Monroe band
was even worse. They didn't march at all during the half. The most important game of the
season, and they weren't even marching! The nerve! hehehe. So, freezing and tired of
the lack of scoring, I went back to my seat and waited for the second half to begin.
When it began, it did so just like the first half. We couldn't complete any passes, and
our runs would gain 5-6 yards at most. Until the injury. While running the ball, MG star
quarterback Pat Paulus was injured in the tackle. He was replaced by junior Danny Tietz.
2 minutes later, we were up 6-0. We were ecstatic. However, we missed the extra point.
While it may not seem like much, it made a difference. All they needed was a touchdown
and an extra point kick and they'd lead. Fortunately, we got a field goal early in the
fourth quarter, putting us up 9-0. We were riding high, until the filthy Cheesemakers
scored that touchdown and extra point. On top of that, they got the ball with 3 minutes
left. So, let's review the situation. The conference championship game, 3:00 left,
score was 9-7, and they had the ball. All they needed was a field goal. They drove down
the field, and were at the MG 45-yard line with a minute left. It looked grim for us.
But then: Tyler Sternberg saved the game. He intercepted the pass and ended their drive.
So, we won 9-7. First place!
After the clock ran down, we rushed the field. This was odd
because I have never ever heard of the visiting team's fans rushing the field. It was
great. So, since we finished in first place, our first playoff game will be Tuesday,
October 23 in Monona. It will be fun. Also, it will be another true-life MG football
story. Woo! See ya then!
